COLD SCAPES – IN THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE

18-12-2007

The thawing permafrost in the arctic regions is one of the most important themes in the current debate about climate change. In its December 2007 issue The National Geographic Magazine published a picture story by Bernhard Edmaier entitled “Cold scapes” related to this phenomenon. There you can find images from Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Spitsbergen and Siberia.

Over the years, Bernhard Edmaier has taken many images of permafrost landscapes during his many trips to the Arctic. He is particularly interested in the structures created by the permanent change of thawing and freezing of the upper layer of the soil and rock, which is often barren and devoid of any vegetation.

In the summer months of 2005, he visited some characteristic permafrost areas on an assignment of the National Geographic Society.

The accompanying essay about the effects of global warming on the arctic regions was written by Barry Lopez, an American author well known for his exciting descriptions of Nature.
