The valley of the Kuiseb River in Namibia, southwest Africa, is dry for most of the year. Water flows there only after heavy rainfalls, when flash floods then rush down the river beds, washing away the red sand blown in by the wind between rainfalls, thus preventing the desert from spreading over the dark hills.
