The shadows thrown by the low, early morning sun highlight the snaking crest of a long sand dune in the Namib in Namibia. The sheltered side is steep, while sandy scales have gathered on the windward side. The desert it considered one of the world’s driest deserts, and in some places there are no more than 20 millimetres of rainfall per year.
