The tributaries of the South Alligator River submerge the flood plains in Australia’s Kakadu National Park with both salt and with fresh water. Murky fresh water, green with algae, is surrounded by brackish swamps that salt-loving algae have stained red. The ground is partly soft and partly covered in a dry crust. Only well adapted plants are able to survive such extreme growth conditions.
