The water of this desert river in the sandy wastes of Tsondabvlei in the Namib Desert have collected in a trough between the dunes and evaporated. The crust of alluvial sand deposited on the river bed is covered in dark green algae. These dead-end hollows are known in the country as ‘Vleis’.
