A narrow belt of mangrove trees fringes the shore of the South Alligator River in the Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia, forming a frontier with the land. The water in the main river is deep and dark green. It meets the tributary, which carries a muddy sediment that stains it yellowish. Their differing densities prevent the two types of water from mixing.
