Each year the Rhine washes more than 2.5 cubic kilometers of clay, sand and loose stone from the Alps into Lake Constance on the border of Austria, Switzerland and south Germany. Heavy and clouded with its load, the river initially pushes the turquoise-green lake water aside before sinking into the dark, deeper parts of the basin.
