The towering rock formations of Pffaffenstein in the Elbsandsteingebirge, a sandstone hills range along the River Elbe, rise up to 428 m high above the surface. The rocks are covered by a black patina which is formed by algae, which settle in the most notably porous and damp parts of the precipices.
