This group of small atolls constitutes the northern part of the Great South Male Atoll.
An atoll is defined as a circle-shaped coral reef or coral island encircling a lagoon and surrounded by the open sea.
The Maldives consist of 26 great atolls which in turn are composed of many micro atolls. The largest atoll is 65 km wide and 82 km long, the smallest is 1.8 km in diameter.
