In 1783, the 25-kilometre Laki Fissure appeared in the terrain of south Iceland. Within seven months, some 12 cubic kilometres of lava issued from around 300 craters that grew along the fissure. The Laki Fissure’s biggest crater is 120 metres in diameter, and contains a lake.
