VOLCANOES – PHOTOGRAPHED FROM THE AIR

NGAURUHOE

The crater of the Ngauruhoe volcano in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, towers to the height of 2,291 metres. Ash containing iron has stained its slopes red. Last time it was active in 1977, when the clouds of ash rose 900 metres into the air, but nobody was harmed in this uninhabited area. The latest signs of volcanic activity were observed in 1994, when scientists monitoring the volcano recorded the release of sulphur gases.

Seen in the background of this picture is Ruapehu, 2,797 metres high. Its crater contains a hot acid lake, and the volcano can be very explosive when it erupts. Its last eruption took place in 1996.
