Like a dark cannon muzzle the crater of the 5023 m high Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador emerges from a sea of clouds. It is hardly visible from the ground as this fire-spitting monster is situated on the verge of a rainforest, which is always covered by a thick layer of clouds. The volcano is partly glaciated and permanently ejects small clouds of ash and corrosive gasses. Its name means Hell Mountain in the local language and was given it by the Indio living at its foot.
