Rincon de la Vieja belongs to the group of Costa Rica’s active volcanoes. It is part of the Guanacaste volcanic range. Like Poas, it also contains a hot acid lake in its crater, which can overflow during an eruption. The last eruption occurred in 1998 when a hot mud stream raced down its slopes and destroyed a number of streets and bridges.
