Tens of thousands of years ago this volcanic desert in the Danakil Depression, north Ethiopia, was a branch of the Red Sea. Today, the area is exposed, revealing several of these guyots (extinct, submarin volcano craters). Their hollows fill with water during the rare rainfalls, and the green colouring is probably caused by algae.
