The Breidamerkurjöküll Glacier, south-east, a broad side-arm of the Vatanajökull Glacier and one of Europe’s largest ice sheets, delivers large quantities of melt-water. Some of this collects at the front of the glacier to form Lake Jökulsárlón. Measuring a total of 910 square kilometres, it is one of the best-charted glaciers on earth, having been regularly surveyed since 1904. These surveys have shown that it has shrunk by about two kilometres since 1973.
