These islands of red sand protrude centimetres above the surface of Lake Amadeus, in the dry, hot, central part of Australia. The lake is filled with water for only a few weeks of the year. What remains after it evaporates is a thin layer of salt clay. The plants that have taken root on the sand islands are very hardy, able to withstand salt as well as heat and drought.
