In summer, the Carrizo Plain in southern California, USA, is dry as a bone. The lake, its tributaries and the small pools around have vanished. The ground in the hollows, as well as the river beds, are covered with a gleaming salt crust, and the air shimmers over the hot ground. Only in November, when it starts to rain again in the nearby hills, does water reaccumulate on the plain, which is approximately 70 kilometres long and 15 kilometres wide. Then thousands of migrating birds gather here after their long journey to fill up on the algae growing in the lakes.
