Fascinated by the various structures of the earth’s surface, Bernhard Edmaier concentrates on the subject of colour in his book of photographic images, ‘Atelier Erde’ (Colours of the Earth – Nature’s Studio). In this work, a sequel to ‘Projekt GeoArt – Kunstwerk Erde’ (GeoArt – The Earth as a Work of Art), he continues to explore our planet’s forms and structures and its wide-ranging colour spectrum: yellow, red, blue, green, brown, and black and white. This time, however, he focuses on subtle colour nuances, shades, tones and gradations which in their luxuriant variety reach far beyond the seemingly basic colours of the earth. The photographer’s perfect play with proximity and distance makes real forms into abstract images as he directs his extraordinary glance at the lush colours our planet has to offer.
The scientific explanations written by a geologist and science journalist, Dr Angelika Jung-Hüttl, serve to enhance the reader’s perception and impact of these unique images.

Press Reviews
‘Where does colour originate? Bernhard Edmaier portrays decay, freezes processes, which under normal circumstances take millions of years, and shows the earth as it came into being – he sees the world through God’s eyes.’, SPIEGEL Reporter
‘Fabulously beautiful – it is the only way to describe the new volume of photography by the renowned photographer and geologist. This opulent work is a photographic study at its best. ‘Atelier Erde’ is fantastic - the most enchanting and captivating photographic art to date.’, bild der wissenschaft
‘In his latest volume of photography Bernhard Edmaier shows us the world as a glistening colour palette – breathtaking aerial images and close-ups of the stuff nature is made of….With its explosion of colour, Bernhard Edmaier’s nature photography reminds one of Action Paintings. This time, the photographer choreographs his images of an intoxicating rupture of colours nature has to offer into a ‘symphonie phantastique’. Yet again, he ventures out to show natural landscapes as magnificent abstractions, which were heralded as unique experiences in his previous photographic volume. ‘Atelier Erde’ makes geology a work of art.’, fotoMAGAZIN
