PATTERNS OF THE EARTH

published in English, French and German, Phaidon / London, 2007

It is the title of Bernhard Edmaier’s latest book of photographic images published by a renowned art books publisher, Phaidon, London. It shows images of multifaceted structures of the Earth surface classified according to shapes; circles, ribbons, stripes, cracks, dots, grids, coils and other forms.

Around 400 images, mainly aerial shots, are presented as a kaleidoscope of patterns which are records of natural geological processes occurring on the Earth’s crust over millennia. Bernhard Edmaier enables us to see the various landscape components anew as part of a greater complete whole. Seen from that perspective, rivers turn into winding ribbons, rock formations into stripes, and volcano craters or islands into circles.

Every image is accompanied by a short text explaining how each of the forms originated and where it is located. These captions and the introduction have been written by Angelika Jung-Hüttl, PhD., a geologist and science journalist.

"Patterns of the Earth" appeared on the English speaking market last March. In May, the book is due to out in French and German. It can be viewed as a fascinating reference book as well as a genuine source of inspiration not only to artists, designers and teachers but also to general public and to all those who are interested in experiencing the beauty of the surface of our planet contained in a multitude of combinations of forms, colours and patterns.

225 x 125 mm, hardback, 240 pages, 400 coloured images, € 19.95
